Zendium “a progressive approach towards improving gingival health

During this year’s EuroPerio9 congress, Unilever showcased data which demonstrates how daily use of Zendium toothpaste improves gingival health by balancing the oral microbiome. Results are said to be “perfectly aligned with the evolving view of the pathology of periodontal disease which puts microbial balance, rather than microbial elimination, at its heart”.

Dr Mark Edwards, Global R&D Director at Unilever, explained: “In 2017 we published data which showed for the first time how Zendium toothpaste has a positive species-level effect on the oral microbiome.

“Now we build on this with two studies showing the clinical benefit this balancing effect has in the mouth, and specifically on gingival health.”

Zendium is a toothpaste that works differently. In addition to fluoride, its unique SLS-free formulation contains natural enzymes and proteins which boost the natural salivary defences and balance the oral microbiome. A landmark study, published in 2017, showed that over 14-weeks’ use, Zendium significantly increased health-associated bacteria and significantly reduced disease-associated bacteria.

These findings complement a growing expert consensus which recognises that it is the overall balance of the oral microbiome which is key to oral health rather than the simple presence or absence of a specific pathogen.

Two further studies now demonstrate the clinical benefit of Zendium’s balancing effect. In a 13-week controlled clinical trial, 83% of Zendium users experienced improved gingival health with Zendium showing superiority vs control across all three clinical indices measured.

Supporting these results, a real-world study of over 300 people in Denmark revealed that long-term Zendium users had significantly better gingival health than those using regular toothpastes.

“The results of our recent studies provide compelling evidence that promoting a balanced oral microbiome with Zendium leads to gum health benefits,” concludes Dr Edwards. “Our ongoing R&D programme will build on this understanding and help us develop a portfolio of products which provide tangible clinical benefits and meet patient needs.”
