New clinical study demonstrates the effectiveness of Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed LED accelerated tooth whitening

Research carried out at the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Dentistry, Houston, [1] demonstrates that “dental professionals can now be more confident than ever in offering Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed LED chairside tooth whitening.

The evidence conclusively shows that in-practice treatment using 6% hydrogen peroxide and LED acceleration delivers “statistically significant superior results” when compared with the same treatment without LED boosting. It has also been proven to maintain the bleaching effects thanks to its long lasting formula, which means whitening is not due to temporary enamel dehydration, which has been an issue with some treatments in the past.

The trial was conducted amongst 77 patients, and followed a randomised, single blind, split mouth design. The group consisted of 43 female and 34 male participants with an average age of 49. Researchers used the VITA Easyshade guide to measure changes in tooth colour, and whitening was carried out using the 4 x 15-minute regime of 6% hydrogen peroxide followed by the patients applying three doses of Philips Zoom NiteWhite 16% carbamide peroxide at home.

Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed LED acceleration demonstrated minimal shade fade back immediately after treatment, which was maintained 7 and 14 days after treatment. Philips maintains that the clinical study allows dental professionals to confidently tell patients that the new system is proven to whiten teeth up to seven shades lighter in 60 minutes with zero fade back.

The secret is in Zoom WhiteSpeed’s advanced blue LED light-activated technology which accelerates the whitening process by up to 30%. The LED accelerator emits twice the light intensity of the closest competitive professional whitening lamp, with no compromise in patient safety. However, it also offers a variable light intensity function for patients with sensitivity, promising a more comfortable treatment experience.

In brief Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed LED accelerated whitening provides:

• Clinically proven whitening up to 7 shades in 60 minutes
• Zero fade back
• Lasting results with no shade relapse after two weeks when combined with take-home whitening
• Up to 30% faster tooth whitening compared to non-light accelerated processes
• Brighter, whiter, healthier looking smiles

The research was presented on the Philips stand during BDIA Showcase, and followed by live demonstrations throughout the Show. For more information visit www.philips.co.uk/dentalprofessional
